Three centimetres of clearance for a 325-tonne engine

Precision technology helps Krebs to move five drive units in Cuxhaven.

There is always something going on at the Cuxport deep water terminal. As a transhipment centre with multimodal connections, a wide variety of goods are loaded here for their journey to their destination all over the world.

This time, five diesel engines from the manufacturer MAN were waiting in one of the many warehouses. Krebs Korrosionschutz GmbH was responsible for the transport out of the warehouse to the edge of the pier.

With aplomb through the eye of the needle

The Krebs specialists assembled a self-propelled heavy duty platform trailer for this task in the form of a 12-axle variant with a 372 kW power pack. Just the perfect configuration to pick up and manoeuvre out the 325-tonne engines one after the other.

Once again, the operator needed to have a good eye and a steady hand when steering, Because the challenge is at the hall's doorway: the loading height in the driving position of the combined module and load was 8.07 metres. The clearance height of the door was 8.10 metres .... so there was barely space to push a hand in-between.

Precision technology with electronic steering

"But it was enough when you have precise transport technology at your disposal like the 3,000 mm-wide and 8-fold tyred ModulMAX", said Krebs supervisor Jörg Neuhäusel, explaining the demanding boundary conditions. The electronic steering ensures millimetre precision and the 4.5 metre wide combination steers safely through the eye of the needle into the open air.

Here, a pontoon crane was waiting abeam to lift these engines effortlessly into the freight ship. And off it goes on its journey across the ocean.
